Abstract:
The main determinants of economic growth, social development and quality of life for communities are energy and energy use. In the face of fluctuating fossil fuels costs and a growing demand for energy, the need for an alternative and sustainable energy source has increased. Energy generation from renewable sources is also important from social and economic standpoint; it also can reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Biomass makes a major contribution to the world and nation’s renewable energy portfolio. In the past twenty years, woody biomass has been recognized as an important energy source which can be used primarily for heat generation – combustion, in rural areas of the Republic of Moldova.
