Trophic interactions and ecological impact of the invasive leafhopper species Hauptidia maroccana first record for Republic of Moldova

Abstract

Hauptidia maroccana (Melichar, 1907), commonly known as the greenhouse leafhopper, is an invasive species exhibiting polyphagous feeding behaviour, capable of utilising a wide range of botanical families as hosts. This study reports, for the first time, the presence of this species in the Republic of Moldova, based on observations conducted in autumn 2023 at the Institute of Genetics, Physiology and Plant Protection. Adult specimens were initially identified on ornamental plants of the genus Pelargonium (family Geraniaceae) and subsequently on species from the genera Zantedeschia and Kalanchoe. A notably higher incidence was recorded on Lobularia maritima, suggesting a potential trophic preference for this plant. These findings underscore the species’ high ecological adaptability in protected environments and emphasise the need for further research into host selection and the potential for establishment in similar green spaces and agroecosystems in the region.
