Abstract:
The increase in global demand for food has led to an increase in livestock in intensive production systems, which aim to maximise profits. The implementation of good animal welfare practices continues to be a problem and is a growing concern of society, reflected by scientific research in the field of veterinary medicine to inform current policies and practices. Sometimes the veterinarian finds himself between two dilemmas, regarding the scientific logic of animal health care, regarding the responsibility of improving the welfare of animals, owner or animal. Even in the most difficult animal welfare issue, the veterinarian must decide on the course of action, which will most professionally approach the situation. It is not simple, but always necessary. Veterinarians, as experts in the fields of animal health and welfare, environmental health and public health, and in view of the growing attention of consumers to animal welfare issues, need to step up the search for innovative solutions and technologies that meet current and future sustainability and food safety needs.
