Abstract

The appearance and evolution of the cemetery and of the funerary constructions in the Romanian space was a process of long duration and of a special complexity. The cemetery is a system of values and ideas, which has evolved over the centuries from parish cemeteries around churches to funeral sites arranged outside the localities. The cemeteries in the current space of the Republic of Moldova are funerary complexes that include the church in the cemetery, the burial place, the architectural constructions, funerary monuments. Often the cemetery is an archive of local and national history, exercising social, religious, commemorative functions.
