This paper examines the mechanisms of political repression exerted by the Soviet regime on the village of Pelinei, Cahul District, during the 1940-1941 period. The central objective is to document the process of eliminating local administrative elites and the class of prosperous farmers, utilizing "The Book of Memory" (Cartea Memoriei) as the primary source. The research highlights the succession of repressive stages, from the sentencing of former mayors in the year of annexation to the collective deportation operations of June 1941. The criteria for victim selection are investigated, demonstrating the systemic nature of the terror that targeted entire family groups, regardless of age. The study illustrates how the social structure of the locality was dismantled through the methodical application of forced labor and forced exile to the Siberian regions. This endeavor constitutes a research into the impact of totalitarianism on the communities of Southern Bessarabia, grounded in factual evidence and the necessity of historical rehabilitation.
