Abstract

Construction of the dam which started in early 1993 and was completed in 2006, has surpassed all records in domain, being the tallest dam (185 m and 2335 m in length), with the biggest reservoir (1085 km2, 663 km long and 39,3 percent billion m3) and produces the largest quantity of electric power (84,68 billion kW\/h). The good parts of this project consists in the production of electricity (electric capacity will reach 22,5 GW), fewer emissions of greenhouse gases, increasing the capacity of river transport, and flood prevention and control - a major problem for the seasonal nature of the Yangtze which has made more than 300,000 casualties during its history.
